Juncao Grass Technology and Soil Restoration In Rwanda | A Path to a Greener Rwanda

In the heart of East Africa, Rwanda is embracing a green revolution—powered by a remarkable innovation known as Juncao Grass Technology. At the forefront of this transformation is Philemon Farm Ltd, a pioneering agribusiness committed to sustainable agriculture, food security, and environmental restoration.

What is Juncao Grass?

Juncao, meaning “mushroom grass” in Chinese, is a hybrid of 36 fast-growing, high-protein grass species originally developed in China. This grass is not just a plant—it’s a solution. It grows up to 6 meters tall, yields up to 180 tons per hectare annually, and thrives in poor soils with minimal water. At Philemon Farm, we’ve adapted this technology to address Rwanda’s most pressing agricultural and environmental challenges.

Restoring Rwanda’s Soil with Juncao

Soil erosion and land degradation are major issues in Rwanda, especially in hilly and rural areas. Juncao grass acts as a natural barrier, stabilizing slopes and enriching the soil. Its deep root system prevents erosion, while its biomass improves soil fertility. By planting Juncao, farmers can reclaim barren land and turn it into productive farmland.

Empowering Farmers and Communities

Philemon Farm has trained over 500 farmers across Rwanda and East Africa in Juncao cultivation. We distribute Juncao cuttings, provide hands-on training, and support farmers in mushroom production, animal feed processing, and eco-friendly charcoal making. Our goal is to create a circular economy where nothing goes to waste.

Juncao for Livestock Feed

With a protein content of over 18%, Juncao grass is a superior alternative to traditional fodder. It’s drought-resistant, cost-effective, and can be stored for up to 3 years. We process it into species-specific feed for cows, goats, pigs, poultry, and even fish—boosting animal health and reducing reliance on expensive imported feeds.

Sustainable Mushroom Farming

Juncao grass is also used as a substrate for mushroom cultivation. We train farmers to grow mushrooms at home using low-cost systems. The mushrooms are then bought back by Philemon Farm and sold fresh or processed into nutritious products like mushroom powder, bread, and snacks—helping fight malnutrition and generate income.

Eco-Friendly Charcoal Briquettes

Our innovation doesn’t stop at farming. We recycle expired mushroom substrates and Juncao biomass into clean-burning charcoal briquettes. These briquettes are affordable, long-lasting, and reduce deforestation by replacing traditional wood-based charcoal.
