Juncao Silage Training in China for Sustainable Animal Feed

Philemon Farm visited China to study how to produce high-quality silage from Juncao grass using Juncao Technology for livestock feeding. This method provides nutritious, eco-friendly, and sustainable animal feed for cattle, goats, sheep, and other farm animals.

Juncao grass is a high-yield grass widely used in sustainable agriculture, animal feed production, mushroom farming, and climate-smart farming systems in Africa.

Step-by-Step Juncao Silage Making Process

First, fresh Juncao grass is harvested and cut at the appropriate growth stage. After harvesting, the Juncao grass is placed in a grinding machine to convert it into a smooth and fresh material suitable for silage production.

For a standard 50 kg silage mixture:

  • 47.6 kg fresh Juncao grass
  • 2.4 kg maize flour or corn cob
  • 0.3% to 0.5% salt
  • 2% to 5% wheat bran
  • Moisture content around 80% (natural fresh Juncao)

After proper mixing, the material is tightly packed and sealed in silage bags using a sealing machine to ensure that no oxygen enters. This anaerobic condition allows proper fermentation and preservation of nutrients for animal feeding.
