Philemon Farm Visits China National Engineering Research Centre of Juncao Technology (FAFU)
Philemon Farm recently had the privilege to visit the China National Engineering Research Centre of Juncao Technology at Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University (FAFU), where the global innovation of Juncao Grass cultivation and Juncao Technology was pioneered.
In this visit, we witnessed firsthand how Giant Juncao Grass is propagated for the first time — from preparing the seedgrass, planting, to cultivating biomass that can be used as substrate for mushrooms, as animal feed for livestock, and as raw material for sustainable agriculture.
Juncao Technology (from “Jun” = fungi, “Cao” = grass) offers a powerful alternative to wood- or forest-based substrates, enabling sustainable mushroom farming, production of animal feed, and ecological agriculture practices. :contentReference[oaicite:1]{index=1}
Our mission at Philemon Farm is to bring this cutting-edge technology to Rwanda and across Africa — to promote mushroom cultivation, livestock feeding, climate-smart agriculture, and green jobs for youth and women by using locally-cultivated Juncao Grass.
Below is the official video from our visit, showing step-by-step how Juncao Grass is prepared and propagated at the source — the heart of Juncao research in China:
🔹 Why This Matters for Africa & Philemon Farm
- 🌿 Sustainable Mushroom Production: Using Juncao Grass instead of wood protects forests and reduces cost.
- 🐄 Affordable Animal Feed: High-biomass Juncao Grass can serve as nutritious feed for livestock throughout dry seasons.
- 🌱 Climate Smart Agriculture: Juncao cultivation supports soil conservation, sustainable land-use, and environmental protection.
- 📈 Economic Empowerment: Smallholders, youth, and women can leverage Juncao for mushroom farming or livestock feed production — boosting food security and livelihoods.
Philemon Farm aims to replicate this success in Rwanda by training farmers, setting up demonstration farms, and promoting Juncao-based agriculture for sustainable development.
