Juncao Tissue Culture Training in China

Philemon Farm participated in advanced training in China to study the Juncao tissue culture process, a scientific method used to produce disease-free and high-quality Juncao planting materials for sustainable agriculture.

Juncao tissue culture is essential for rapid multiplication of Juncao grass, which is widely used for mushroom farming, animal feed, climate-smart agriculture, and eco-friendly farming systems in Africa.

Step-by-Step Juncao Tissue Culture Process

The process begins with the selection of young Juncao branches with healthy buds. These branches are cut into single nodes to ensure effective tissue propagation.

The explants are first treated with 75% alcohol to reduce contamination and then transferred into a laminar flow cabinet to maintain a sterile laboratory environment. After that, the materials are washed with distilled water two to three times.

Next, the Juncao nodes are sterilized using mercuric chloride for about 16 minutes to eliminate bacteria and fungi. All laboratory tools and equipment are also sterilized to ensure a contamination-free process.

After sterilization, the explants are rinsed again with sterile distilled water before being placed on prepared culture media such as Agar or MS (Murashige and Skoog) media. Under controlled conditions, the buds grow and multiply into new Juncao plantlets.

Importance of Juncao Tissue Culture for Africa and Rwanda

Through this training in China, Philemon Farm is strengthening Juncao Technology in Rwanda and Africa by promoting:

  • High-yield Juncao grass production
  • Disease-free planting materials
  • Sustainable agriculture systems
  • Climate-smart farming practices
  • Juncao mushroom farming and animal feed innovation

This knowledge helps farmers, researchers, and institutions adopt modern Juncao propagation techniques for long-term agricultural sustainability.
