Training on Juncao Technology: New Knowledge for Sustainable Agriculture in Rwanda

On May 18, 2025, Philemon Farm Ltd once again made history in advancing sustainable agriculture in Rwanda through the innovative Juncao Technology. Today, we conducted a special training session where we taught participants how to produce mushroom spawn, cultivate mushrooms, and grow Juncao grass—all practices aimed at promoting agriculture, protecting the environment, and increasing productivity.

What We Covered in the Training

During today’s training, we focused on the following key areas:

1. How Juncao grass is cultivated and managed: We explained how this grass grows quickly, is drought-resistant, and can yield up to 180 tons per hectare per year.
2. How it is used to produce mushroom spawn and mushrooms: We demonstrated how Juncao grass serves as a raw material for mushroom cultivation, reducing the need for wood and helping preserve forests.
3. How it is processed into animal feed: We showed how it can be turned into high-protein feed (over 18% protein) for various animals such as cows, goats, pigs, poultry, and fish.
4. How it is turned into eco-friendly charcoal: We presented how to make clean, sustainable charcoal using leftover mushroom substrates and Juncao biomass.

Impact on the Rwandan Community

Our training aims to:

1. Increase productivity for smallholder farmers through simple, eco-friendly farming methods.
2. Combat malnutrition by promoting mushrooms, which are rich in nutrients.
3. Create jobs and business opportunities for youth and women through mushroom processing, charcoal production, and Juncao-based products.
4. Fight soil erosion and climate change by planting Juncao grass on hillsides and erosion-prone areas.
